Mission Statement-

Prana Farms intends on being a fully functional farm, while at the same
time serving as a teaching and experimentation facility.  Our mission is
to implement methods of sustainability, preserving genetic biodiversity,
and show profitability implementing permaculture techniques and
practices. We intend to create a strong network between urban and rural
communities which fosters bio-region sustainability.  We desire to pass
on these practices and values to our children, and show that it is not
only possible, but profitable to implement conscious, sustainable
practices on a small scale farm.

Core Values-
  • BIOREGION SUSTAINABILITY-
Most of the food we eat comes an average of 3000 miles from where it
is grown to the place it is purchased for consumption.  All of the
agriculture grown in the Pacific Northwest comes nowhere near the
amount needed to support the urban areas within the region, and we
have less of an imbalance than most of the country.  This will become
more apparent as transportation and food costs increase, inevitably
increasing the price of food.  It is more important than ever to buy local
whenever possible, insuring that the local farmers will still be around
when access to foreign markets becomes more limited.
  • LESSENING PETROLEUM DEPENDENCY-
It has been stated that for each calorie unit of food we eat, an average of
10 calorie units of petroleum were used to cultivate, fertilize, harvest,
transport, and package it.  Whereas it is not feasible currently to end
petroleum use on the farm, it is possible to seek out bioregion markets,
lessening transportation oil dependency, implementing healthy soil/
organic techniques to remove the need for synthetic fertilizers, and by
using environmentally conscious packaging.  We choose manpower
rather than petroleum power whenever feasible.
  • PRESERVING GENETIC DIVERSITY IN PLANTS AND
    ANIMALS-
We love Heirlooms and grow many varieties of almost every type of
fruit or vegetable we grow.  The diversity of flavor and characteristics
of Heirloom produce inspires us.  We are dedicated to preserving their
stronger, more stable genetics for the future.
  • WORKING TOGETHER AS A FAMILY-
The quality of life, work ethic, and connection with nature that can be
shared working together as a family on the farm is profound.  Children
gain a great deal of experience and self respect in a community where all
members at all ages can contribute to the overall growth and
sustainability of their environment.
